WMP12 "PlayTo" device from media server (NAS)

In Windows 8.1, using WMP I am unable to "PlayTo" the music from my NAS drive to wireless speakers.

I have the required setup working on a separate Windows 7 pc.

In Windows Media Player, i can access/play the music on my NAS drive (in other libraries) and also "PlayTo" local content (C drive) to my speakers. However, i cannot "PlayTo" my speakers directly from my NAS drive in other libraries. When i attempt to do this, i click on the "PlayTo" button, it egg-timers for 1 second but nothing else happens.

To get round this, i can index/mount the drives within the main music library, though this takes much too long to load - 2 hours.

Please advise any solutions. Is WMP working correctly on Windows 8.1?

Thanks

Ed

Hi,

Firstly, have you tried to connect your speaker with wired for test if it could work properly? If that it is, it should be network problem between WMP and wireless speaker.

On the other hand, please try to use WMP troubleshooter to fix WMP for test.

Thanks for the reply

The speaker works with local content - i can send the sample music on my C drive wirelessly/wired to the speakers. However, I cannot send remote music wirelessly to the speaker, only through a wired setup.

I have tried the troubleshooting but no success - basically told me i'd changed my default settings/library was corrupted. I reset the library (there's 3 sample songs) but issue still exists.

Other things i've tried:

- Restoration of factory settings of PC (reinstalling windows 8, upgrading to 8.1)
- Adding registry key (http://digitalmediaphile.com/index.php/2013/07/15/how-to-use-non-certified-play-to-devices-in-windows-8-1/)

I'm stuck, further suggestions appreciated

Thanks

Ed

Hi,

According to your description, it seems like speaker wireless connection problem. What's the type of the connection between PC with speaker? Bluetooth?

Please check Speaker wireless connection driver edition if it was upgrade to be latest. It would be better to access to official website to download and reinstall the driver for test.

Perhaps, i wasn't too clear above - by wired i was thinking AUX/HDMI...

Local machine - Sony Vaio running Windows 8.1 Pro, intel core i7, 4GB RAM
NAS drive - Synology DS213j
Speakers - Heos 5 by Denon

Router - technicolor TG582n

I can do: 1) NAS drive to Local Machine (WMP) over wifi
      2) Local Machine (WMP) to speakers over wifi

I cannot do: 3) NAS drive to Local Machine (WMP) to Speakers over wifi

However, I can do 1), 2) and 3) on my Windows 7 machine.

I believe this is an issue with my Windows 8.1/WMP not the network

Thanks again for your help

Are you running and third party AV/Firewall/Virtualization software/VPN software?

There was an application error on the event viewer (copied below).

It was added just after I reattempted to "PlayTo" my speakers.

The event wasn't linked to anything on the Mircosoft Tech website. Would replacing the msvcrt.dll file fix my problem?

I don't see one.   You can try going into programs and features and turning Media Features OFF, restart, then turn them ON, restart and see if anything changes.

I think linked to .NET framework?

I tried disabling/enabling media features, when that didn't work, I also attempted disabling/enabling .NET framework, but to no avail.

Any other ideas?

Thanks

Post-reinstalling Windows, i attempted "PlayTo" before reinstalling my AV (AVG) with the same issue described above.

New user accounts also have the same problem.

It sounds like something I'm going to have to live with or get some 3rd party software like JRiver, to do the job

Hi, ed_maestro,

In my opinion, I don't think it's WMP problem. Have you tried 3rd party app for test? Will them works correctly?

It's seems like wireless network problem which there is relationship with media app.

Hia

Yep, worked instantly with JRiver - found the library (NAS) and able to push the music to speakers

Also, if it was a wireless network problem, surely it would fail on Windows 7 as well?
